Plan the details you see, and the waterproofing and services you don’t.
A bathroom is a small room with closely connected technical decisions. Start beneath the tiles: water, drainage, ventilation and the floor build-up shape what the finished space can do.

DETAIL STUDY / BATHROOM RENOVATION
Investigate bathroom leaks, damp and condensation
Record leaks, staining, loose finishes, condensation and persistent odours, including when they occur. These are observations to discuss with a qualified professional, not a diagnosis. A leak, moisture entering from elsewhere and inadequate ventilation can need different responses. Replacing tiles or applying paint before understanding the cause may leave the underlying problem unresolved.
Ask what existing plumbing, substrate and ventilation need to be checked during the assessment and what can only be confirmed after removal. The Quarteira renovation guide discusses exposure and apartment access. Coastal location alone does not establish the cause of damp in a particular bathroom.
Plan bathroom layouts, drainage and shower access
Map the door swing, toilet clearance, basin reach and entry to the shower. Think about use with limited mobility, cleaning and future maintenance as well as the appearance of the fixtures. A larger shower can be valuable, but only if it leaves usable circulation around the other fittings. Record the practical priorities before committing to products.
A level-access shower depends on floor levels, drainage position and available construction depth. Moving sanitaryware can require additional changes to waste and water routes. Ask what is feasible in the existing structure and whether shared building elements could be affected. Where several rooms are changing, link the bathroom decisions to the whole-property renovation scope.
Specify bathroom waterproofing and ventilation
Ask how the wet-area build-up will be specified, including junctions, penetrations and the relationship between drainage and the finished floor. Waterproofing is not simply a tile choice. Products and installation need to work as a system, with appropriate preparation and checks. Confirm who is responsible for the specification and recording any agreed tests.
Discuss how moist air will leave the room and how replacement air can enter. Existing routes, external openings and shared ducts may constrain the options. In a condominium, do not assume permission to alter a common system; see the Vilamoura apartment renovation guide for questions to raise with the property manager.
Compare bathroom renovation quotations
Separate removal and disposal, plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, preparation, waterproofing, tiling, sanitaryware and decoration. State tile sizes, fixture specifications and whether fittings are supplied by you or the contractor. A quote for fitting alone is not directly comparable with one that includes products and preparation. Confirm tax, exclusions and any provisional allowance for hidden defects.
Access can influence the work: carrying materials upstairs, protecting a lift, removing rubble and working within building rules all need planning. If the kitchen is also being replaced, review the kitchen service-coordination checklist so that connections and deliveries are discussed together.
Plan bathroom downtime and installation checks
For an only bathroom, agree how the household will manage before removal begins. A schedule should account for preparation, product lead times and the curing or drying requirements of the specified systems. Trying to shorten those stages without technical agreement can compromise the work. Ask what inspection or testing is planned before concealed work is covered.
At completion, review the agreed fittings, operation, visible finishes and maintenance instructions. Record outstanding items clearly. Bathroom renovation questions in the Algarve
How much does a bathroom renovation in the Algarve cost?
Room size alone is not enough to estimate the job. Layout changes, hidden condition, waterproofing, ventilation, access and fixture specification matter. Obtain an itemised assessment-based quote; this site has no verified tariff.
Can every bath be replaced by a level-access shower?
No. Floor levels, structure and drainage can constrain a level threshold. A qualified assessment should establish feasible options before products are ordered or an accessible layout is promised.
Will new tiles fix damp or condensation?
Not necessarily. The cause must be investigated so that the proposed repair or ventilation work addresses it. New finishes can hide symptoms without resolving a leak, moisture entry or an airflow issue.
How long will the bathroom be out of use?
Ask the proposed provider for a scope-specific programme. Removal, repairs, preparation, installation, curing requirements and checks affect the period without use. No standard completion time is promised by this guide.
